Left Brain vs. Right Brain
This one’s been bugging me. Since I wear so many hats these days. Some are more comfortable than others, a lot more. And I often wonder, why do I naturally gravitate toward certain things, and try to avoid others like the plague? Is that the left brain/right brain phenomena showing up? Or is it simply my inexperience coming through? Yes, we all have our strengths and weaknesses, but are we truly either left brain or right brain, so to speak? Here we go:
Neuroscientists at the University of Utah scanned over a thousand brains and found exactly zero evidence that left brain/right brain is a real thing. Both hemispheres work together on everything — logic, emotion, creativity, all of it. The left brain/right brain thing is pop psychology that got completely out of hand.
But here's what IS real: some people generate ideas, and some people execute them. I’ve always assumed those were like opposite ends of a spectrum when, it turns out, the research says they're not. They're separate dials. And you can turn up both.
A buddy of mine once told me, "I'm not creative like you. Just tell me what to do and I'll get it done." But that's not true. He can spot a great idea from a mile away. He can tell you instantly what's wrong with a pitch or what's missing from a plan. He just doesn't generate from scratch — and that IS a form of creativity. It's called evaluative creativity, and it's just as valuable as the generative kind. I liken it to the way editors just “know” a good story when they hear one.
Which brings me to AI. It doesn't wake up and think, "You know what? Let's build something today." It wakes up and says, "Alright, what are we doing?" It's the ultimate executor. Brilliant at finishing. Needs someone to start.
So if you've ever said "I'm just not a creative person" — you might be selling yourself short.
You might just be waiting for the right prompt. 😉

🔥 Houston Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz
You've never heard a fire chief get this emotional about his job. Houston Fire Department Chief Thomas Muñoz tears up talking about the possibility of pinning his own son as a firefighter — and that's just the opener. He breaks down how Hurricane Katrina built the "not on our watch" philosophy that still drives HFD today, how the department flipped a brutal attrition crisis completely around, and what it actually takes to manage public safety for the FIFA World Cup during hurricane season.

🤖 When AI is Out Sick

You ever sit down to get something done and your WiFi is fine, your computer's fine — but the AI is down? That's the 429 error. Too many requests. Too many people trying to get into the club at the same time! Or the 503 error — service unavailable. The Fire Marshal shut down the club! 😫
And suddenly you realize just how much of your workflow runs through one very busy data center you've never seen.
We've been here before. The internet went down in 2001, you took a smoke break. The AI goes down in 2026, the whole office is closed.

💸 The $14 Air Conditioner Fix

There's good and bad news when my air conditioner goes out at home. The bad news is the air conditioner has gone out at home. The good news is I get some hours toward my Registered Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician License! that was the case earlier this week when my unit started blowing warm air inside. 🥵 Every year it's something else. This year it was a $14 part from the local warehouse, in-stock, fixed in a jiffy! And, as always, I couldn’t do any of this without the supervision of my good friend and teacher, Adam Khordaji of Atlas Air Conditioning & Heating. If your system breaks, tell him I sent you.

A 22-Year Run — Frank Espinoza's Last Day
That’s one year for every dog Frank owns. Just kidding. FrankE was my morning show producer for almost all of my two decades at KPRC. By this time tomorrow, Frank will be “boothing” his last newscast at the station. We had a lot of fun over the years. Frank was as steady as they come. Mr. Reliable. And truly loved the show. Congratulations on the next chapter, Frank. It was an honor.
